5 Signs It's Time to Remove a Tree

Trees add beauty and value to your property, but sometimes removal is the safest option. Here are five signs that a tree may need to go.

1. Significant Trunk Damage

Large cracks, cavities, or areas of decay in the trunk compromise the tree's structural integrity. If more than 25% of the trunk is damaged, removal is often recommended.

2. Dead or Falling Branches

A tree that regularly drops large branches is a hazard. While some deadwood is normal, excessive branch death indicates serious health problems.

3. Root Problems

Visible root damage, heaving soil around the base, or fungi growing near the roots can all signal trouble below ground. Compromised roots mean the tree could topple without warning.

4. Leaning

A tree that has suddenly started leaning—especially after a storm—may have root damage. A lean of more than 15 degrees from vertical is cause for concern.

5. Location Issues

Sometimes a healthy tree simply needs to go because it's too close to your home, interfering with power lines, or blocking essential light.
